In January 2008 The Scottish Government set out an ambitious strategy for a Zero Waste Scotland, with plans for waste reduction and recycling throughout the country. £154 million has been pledged by the Scottish Government over the next 3 years to realise this ideal and with the creation of the Zero Waste Think Tank this year, the Scottish Government is showing a clear commitment to laying the foundations for a Zero Waste society.
But what is Zero Waste and what will it mean for individuals, businesses and the public sector? In order for Scotland to truly move towards a Zero Waste society, cross-sectoral co-operation will be required. In the immediate future action must be taken to reach the targets set for the reduction of municipal waste and solid waste sent to landfill, recycling initiatives must be extended and industrial packaging and supply methods must be examined. Longer term, there must be a re-education on the lifecycle of waste products and a focus on how businesses can work in partnership to maximise opportunities and access funding and business support available.

The conference will involve high-calibre discussion on the reality of Zero Waste for Scotland, asking how do we get there and whether we can we lead the way? Looking into the issues of industrial symbiosis, the lifecycle of products, reducing landfill, public sector responsibility, changing employee attitudes and linking environmental goals to business objectives, this conference is crucial to the development of environmental policy in Scotland.
This conference will ask questions and seek answers to the key questions about the strategic implications of Government targets. This event will look at all aspects of resource efficiency and ask what Scotland can and should be doing to link resource initiatives with bottom line performance. Speakers will address what partnerships can and should be formed and how to implement waste reduction policy in your organisation. With workshops facilitated by experts from key organisations, this event will provide practical help for turning policy into practice. Workshops will look at accessing funding, carbon reduction and commercial waste and focus on the specific requirements for key sectors.
Hearing from experts in the field, this conference will see what the road to Zero Waste really looks like. Looking at corporate, public and voluntary strategies, the event will examine the latest thinking on how we can all reduce, recycle and reuse.
