Mike is currently Dean of the School of Business and Enterprise at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh.

Between January 1999 and May 2005, Mike was Professor of Management and initially Head of Department of Management and Marketing and then Founding Dean of Paisley Business School, University of Paisley. He was Principal Special Adviser to the First Minister of Scotland from 2001 until 2003. Mike advised the Home Secretary on the Home Office change plan in 2006.

From September 1997 until December 1998, Mike was Head of the School of Operations Management and Principal Lecturer, Bristol Business School, University of the West of England. Before this he was Senior Lecturer at the Scottish Local Authorities Management Centre at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow.
