Richard has been Chief Executive of the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute in Aberdeen, Scotland since 2006. He is a member of the International Science Steering Committee of the Global Land Project and Director of the Aberdeen Nodal Office for GLP, one of four international offices for this project. He is founding editor of the Journal of Land Use Science and editor of the Environmental Sciences section of the Annals of the Association of American Geographers.
Formerly Head of the Department of Geography at Arizona State University, Richard was also the Programme Director for the Geography and Regional Science Programme at the National Science Foundation in Washington DC and Director of the Geographic Information and Analysis Centre at Montana State University.
His research interests are in land systems, change in environmental and land use systems, sustainable development, climate change, conservation evaluation, and landscape ecology.
