van den brink gabriel 18 08 08.jpgGabriël van den Brink (1950) was educated as a philosopher but he switched to historical research. His main subject is the process of modernization. After finishing his dissertation in 1995 he concentrated on problems of Dutch society.

He published more than 15 books about different aspects of Dutch social life. Titles related to the subject of the present article are among others: Mondiger of moeilijker. Een studie naar politieke habitus van hedendaagse burgers (2002), Schets van een beschavingsoffensief. Over normen, normaliteit en normalisatie in Nederland (2004), Culturele contrasten. Het verhaal van de migranten in Rotterdam (2006), Moderniteit als opgave. Een antwoord aan relativisme en conservatisme (2007) and Prachtwijken? De mogelijkheden en beperkingen van Nederlandse probleemwijken (2007)

In 2006 he was appointed as a full professor in Social Administration at the University of Tilburg. In addition to this function, he is lecturer in Social Safety Studies at the Dutch Police Academy.
