Dr Chris J Spray MBE has been the Director of Environmental Science at the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) since July 2004. Prior to this he was the Environment Director at Northumbrian Water Group.
At present, Chris is responsible for some 400 staff, mainly environmental scientists. This includes chemistry, ecology, hydrology and marine teams, based at locations across the country. He is also responsible for monitoring, assessing and reporting on the Scottish environment. He is Chairman of the SEPA National Environment Group, overseeing integration of science with policy making and regulation.
Chris has extensive experience in Wetland and Wildfowl ecology, including overseas research in Thailand, Russia, Norway and Iceland.
Chris has a PhD in zoology from Aberdeen University and has received an MBE for his services to environmental improvement and conservation in the water industry. He is a past President of the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management and a past member of the Government’s Advisory Committee on Releases to the Environment (ACRE).
