Educated at Morgan Academy in Dundee and Strathclyde University, John has been involved in the grocery trade for almost all of his working life.  He worked with Watson & Philip plc for 25 years involved in cash & carry, delivered wholesaling and latterly retailing in both Scotland and England.  After a short time in sales with Bass Brewers, he joined Morning Noon & Night in 1998 as Trading Manager, become Associate Trading Director before the company was sold to Scotmid in 2004.

John was appointed Chief Executive of SGF in October 2005.

He is married to Kay with one daughter, Katherine.
