He is Director of the UK part of the major collaborative study, the European School Survey Project on Alcohol & other Drugs (ESPAD). He is currently a member of the Co-ordinating Committee of the Consortium of European Alcohol Research Centres (CEARC) and until recently was a scientific advisor to the Dutch Addiction Research Institute.
Martin Plant, a social scientist, has been engaged in research into the social, behavioural and policy aspects of alcohol since 1970. He was based in Edinburgh for 30 years before moving to Bristol in 2002.
He has produced over 300 publications. These include the books Risktakers: Alcohol, Drugs, Sex and Youth (1992), Alcohol: Minimising the Harm: What Works? (1997) and The Alcohol Report (2000). He is co-author (with Professor Moira Plant) of Binge Britain: Alcohol & the National Response (2006). They are co-editors of an anthology entitled Addiction: Major Themes in Health and Social Welfare (2007). Martin Plant has served as a World Health Organization consultant and adviser to a number of UK and overseas Government departments
