Chief Executive, Scottish Prison Service
Michael Ewart was appointed Chief Executive of the Scottish Prison Service from April 2007. Before holding this post, Mike was Head of the Education Department and before that the Head of Schools Groups for the Scottish Executive.
He began his career in the Education Department then worked on Criminal Justice Policy and Roads and Transport following which he was Assistant Private Secretary to the then Secretary of State for Scotland, George Younger in 1981. From October 1982 to October 1983 he held the Civil Service Fellowship in Politics at Glasgow University. His next assignment was to the Health Department in 1983 then in 1987 he returned to Education. Between 1991 and 1999 Mr Ewart worked in Scottish Courts Administration. When the Scottish Court Service secured Agency status in 1994 he took up the first Chief Executive post in the new body.
Mike was educated at Cambridge and York Universities. He joined the Scottish Office in 1977 as a fast stream entrant. His interests are books, music, military history, running, climbing (ice and rock), ski-ing. He has two children.
