Jim McManus is professor of Criminal Justice at Glasgow Caledonian University and is chair of the Mental Health Act Review Group recently appointed by Ministers.
He was previously chair of the Parole Board for Scotland and was the first Scottish Prisons Complaints Commissioner.
Since 2003, he has served as an expert to the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture. In that role he has visited detention facilities, including psychiatric hospitals, in many of the member states of the Council of Europe, concentrating on the legal protections available to patients and carers. He is co-editor with Dr Lindsay Thomson of Mental Health and Scots Law in Practice (Greens, Edinburgh, 2005).
