Summit on Underage Drinking

 Request a place
A one day conference, 2nd September 2008

The Corn Exchange, Edinburgh

Smarter, Safer, Healthier Scotland Scottish Government
Keynote Speakers:
Shona Robison MSP, Minister for Public Health
Adam Ingram MSP, Minister for Children and Early Years

Tackling alcohol misuse is the Scottish Government’s top public health priority.  Protecting children and young people from the harm caused by alcohol misuse by themselves and others is a key component of this.  That is why, last year, Scottish Government Ministers made a commitment to Parliament to host a summit on underage drinking.

This event is being hosted by the Scottish Government Alcohol Misuse Team, with the aim of bringing together a broad range of stakeholders to consider what might be done to tackle underage drinking in Scotland.  It also offers an opportunity to provide feedback on related aspects of the Scottish Government’s alcohol consultation document “Changing Scotland’s relationship with alcohol: a discussion paper on our strategic approach”

We know that many children and young people are drinking too much, putting themselves and others at risk of harm.  We know there is significant public concern regarding alcohol misuse and drunkenness among children and young people, and the related anti-social behaviour and crime which it can fuel.  At the same time, children and young people’s attitudes and behaviours towards alcohol are influenced by those of wider society.  This event provides an opportunity for an exchange of views around what might be done to reduce alcohol-related harm among those children and young people who misuse alcohol.  We hope to see a mix of young people and adults attending the event.  The keynote speech will be delivered by the Minister for Public Health.  A question and answer session will be chaired by the well known writer and broadcaster, Keith Aitken.

Workshops

Workshop 1 – Why do Young People Drink?

This workshop will explore why so many children and young people in Scotland start drinking at an early age and how we might better engage young people in the debate about sensible drinking.

Workshop 2 – Prevention and Education: Changing Attitudes to Alcohol Misuse and Drunkenness

This workshop will explore how we might better educate children and young people about the dangers of alcohol misuse and how we might support a long-term change in attitudes towards alcohol among children and young people.

Workshop 3 – Reducing Access to Alcohol

This workshop will explore how children and young people under 18 years of age currently access alcohol and whether proposals outlined in the Scottish Government’s alcohol consultation document might help to reduce levels of harmful drinking among children and young people

Workshop 4 – The Role of Parents and Carers

This workshop will explore what parents and carers might do to encourage sensible drinking among their children.  Will also consider how we can encourage parents and carers to reflect on their own drinking and the impact of this on their children, as well as how we can better support children and young people affected by parental alcohol misuse.

Who should attend

You should attend if you are interested in contributing to the debate on what can be done to tackle alcohol misuse among children and young people in Scotland.  You should attend if you want to help to develop positive solutions to the problems associated with underage drinking in Scotland.  We hope to see a mix of young people and adults attending the event.  Places are limited so we would advise that you request your place as soon as possible.
