John is a Detective Chief Superintendent with Strathclyde Police. Strathclyde is a force of over 10, 000 officers and staff and covers the central area of Scotland including the city of Glasgow. He has been a police officer for 32 years and most of that time he has spent as a detective. He has been involved in various roles in the investigation of serious crime and in particular as senior investigating officer in murder inquiries.
He was until 2004, deputy head of the Criminal Investigation Department (Operations) with direct responsibility for the force Serious Crime Squad and Fraud Squad. He was a hostage negotiator and was responsible within the force for all matters relating to abduction and extortion.
DCS Carnochan became Head of the Violence Reduction Unit in January 2005. The VRU has nine members of staff in total and their aim is to develop strategy that will bring about sustainable reductions in violence within Strathclyde. In April 2006 the VRU took on a Scotland wide role and are fully supported by the Scottish Government.
