Willie began his apprenticeship in 1972 in Glasgow's shipyards. Over the next 30 years, he progressed from a qualified tradesperson into a variety of managerial roles, culminating in his appointment as Director of the Building Services Department of Glasgow City Council. Throughout this period, Willie continued his further education training at Anniesland College, College of Building and Strathclyde University.
In October 2006, Willie was instrumental in the setting up of City Building (Glasgow) LLP, a unique arms-length business created by Glasgow City Council to operate in the wider economy of Glasgow and the West of Scotland.
City Building now trades in both the public and private sectors, delivering projects ranging from school buildings to private housing. The company is one of Scotland’s largest construction companies, employing over 2,200 skilled staff and has a unique social ethos, providing training and employment to a diverse range of people from the communities it serves.
City Building also has one of Britain's largest training and apprenticeship programmes, providing opportunities to groups including the long-term unemployed and single parents, as well as being proud employers of one of the UK's largest skilled disabled workforces.
