Valerie has led the Criminal Justice Directorate since June 2005.
Before that she led the Civil and International Directorate in the Justice Department for over 4 years. Criminal Justice Directorate has a wide remit in policy and practice for public protection through the substantive criminal law, criminal procedure, management of offenders in the community, the parole system, and victims and witnesses issues.
Important current developments include the reform of the summary justice system, new arrangements for management of offenders in the community and a new regime for alcohol licensing. There are 5 Divisions in the Directorate and a total staff of about 100 people made up of administrative and legal civil servants and secondees from partner bodies.
