Lord Kinclaven was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court in 2005.
He practised as an advocate for 27 years latterly specialising in cases involving catastrophic, head and psychological injuries. He served as an Advocate Depute from 1989 to 1992.
He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1991. He was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates in 1978. He qualified as a solicitor in 1976.
Lord Kinclaven has been a part time Sheriff; a member of the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission and a member of the Scottish Legal Aid Board. He is also a member of the English Bar and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.
