Mr McKenzie has been Principal and Chief Executive of Jewel and Esk College since August 2001. He leads a College with 9,000 students, 375 staff and a turnover of £16m pa. He created the vision, drive and leadership for the College’s e:volve project, a £54m rebuild and modernisation programme due for completion in September 2008.
Since February 2007, in addition to his role as Principal, he has also been acting as Chief Executive of the Association of Scotland’s Colleges, he oversaw the College’s Political and Public Affairs strategy for the 2007 Holyrood elections and the campaigns to return charitable status and against bogus colleges.
A former tenant dairy farmer, he has worked in the College Sector for 25 years and has held most senior posts in Colleges, both academic and support. His expertise is in business psychology, social inclusion, child protection policy, social marketing and special needs education. The Principal’s teaching background is in agriculture, management, computing and strategic planning.
He is a Director of Midlothian Enterprise Trust Ltd, the Scottish Parliamentary & Business Exchange Ltd and an elected director of the Association of Scotland’s Colleges Ltd. He is also the Secretary of the Edinburgh & Lothian Colleges Group and he is Chair of the Scottish Advisory Committee of City & Guilds.
He was named as the IoD Scotland Public Sector Director of the Year for 2007 having been the runner up in 2005.
He has worked extensively in the international markets in Argentina, Malaysia, Romania, Belarus, Bulgaria and Estonia.
The Principal lives in Livingston and is married with two grown up daughters. He is a keen, but disillusioned rugby supporter – supporting Edinburgh and Scotland.
