Lesley Hinds is a native of Dundee, where she qualified as a primary school teacher. She has been a councillor in the City of Edinburgh for over 23 years and is now a councillor for the Inverleith Ward.
During a political career, which began in 1984, she has gained considerable experience across a range of portfolios, including urban regeneration, social inclusion, equalities, licensing, and planning issues. She played a pivotal role in assisting in the redevelopment of Muirhouse, one of the most deprived areas of Edinburgh.
She has held several important positions in local government, including Council Leader and Convener of the Police Board. For the four years to May 2007 she was Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh, when she led several important Edinburgh institutions - the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the International Festival and the One City Trust, among many others.
Most recently she has been the Chair of NHS Health Scotland, the health improvement agency formerly known as HEBS. Currently, she is Chair of Edinburgh’s Mela and Edinburgh’s Fair Trade Group and she convenes Inverleith Neighbourhood Partnership.
