He is a former chair of EDI Ltd., New Edinburgh Ltd. and Edinburgh and Lothians Tourist Board. He has also served on the boards of Edinburgh Venture Trust, Capital Enterprise Trust, and Lothian and Edinburgh Enterprise.

In addition George was on the boards of the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh International Festival, Assembly Productions, The Royal Lyceum Theatre,
7:84 Theatre Company, Edinburgh International Film Festival, and chair of Edinburgh International Science Festival and of Edinburgh Film House.
