Tom’s police career started in 1979 with Strathclyde Police, where he reached the rank of Chief Superintendent, Head of CID Operations. In April 2005 he was appointed the role of Assistant Chief Constable within Lothian and Borders Police, and in June 2006 was appointed Deputy Chief Constable. He has responsibility for Corporate Development, Corporate Communications, Complaints Conduct and Professional Standards, and deputises for the Chief Constable.
He is a member of the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland (ACPOS), with responsibilities under the Business Change Programme Board, Professional Standards, and Crime Business Areas. He is the ACPOS lead officer for the Family Protection portfolio.
