
Mary’s appointment as Convener of Scottish Commission for the Regulation of Care ended in October last year.
Mary was born in Bristol, graduated in sociology at London University, qualified in child care at Liverpool University.
She worked in child care in Dorset from 1961 and in Reading and Berkshire from 1963 until 1977 in various posts through reorganisation of social work in 1971 and local government in 1974. Work ranged from day care of all care groups, home care, housing support, registering/inspecting nurseries, playgroups and childminders to early development of research into effectiveness of social work services.
Came to Scotland in 1978 as Director of Social Work in Grampian and then in Strathclyde in 1993 and Glasgow 1996–98. She has served on many bodies – a generic director! – including ADSW, Child Care Law Review, SHHD Planning Council on Mental Illness, CCETSW, NISW.
Since retirement, served on Board of East Park Glasgow – a voluntary home/ school for children with complex needs - and Independent Assessor for the Commission for Public Appointments. She is also a member of Scottish Social Services Council.
